IRC (Internet Relay Chat):

• is a text-based chat system for instant messaging that rather is an old-technology that is fading away
• is implemented as an application layer protocol with the client-server networking model to facilitate communication in the form of text
• is designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-on-one communication via private messages as well as chat and data transfer,including file sharing
• was, on request, assigned port 194/TCP by IANA but the de-facto standard has always been to run IRC on 6667/TCP and nearby port numbers; 6660–6669/TCP and 7000/TCP
